Marie’s styling workshop: Styling with complementary colors

We receive many questions about how to combine different colors and how to dress colorfully yet harmoniously. My trick is to take help from the color wheel and complementary colors (also known as contrasting colors).

Färghjulet

Complementary colors are pairs of colors that are positioned opposite each other on the color wheel. For example, green and pink, blue and red, purple and yellow. Of course, there are plenty of different shades of each color, and you can also match colors that are positioned next to the opposite color on the color wheel. The color wheel provides a helpful guide for determining which colors to consider.

PINK + GREEN

One of my favorite combinations is pink and green. It’s a natural color combination that often can be found in the nature.

Here, we have combined one of my favorite tunics (S-4XL) with dark green pants (S-3XL) and a green/pink scarf. However, since this is my favorite color combination, I couldn’t resist styling another combination:

Here, I have used a soft, military green color that I combined with pink pants. The result is a romantic styling. You can also see how easy it is to choose which color stands out the most. In outfit number one, the dominant color is pink. If you love pink and it complements your skin tone, that outfit is ideal for you! On the other hand, if you prefer green, the second outfit is a perfect choice!

PURPLE + YELLOW

This outfit is not for the shy! Cheerful colors and patterns in a delightful combination. The tunic, with its beautiful shade of purple, complements our yellow pants perfectly. It creates a softer and warmer impression compared to styling with white pants. The addition of the yellow adds an extra dimension to the outfit, ensuring that you won’t go unnoticed!

NAVY BLUE + WINE RED

A classic combination that exudes a sophisticated impression is navy blue and wine red. As many know, blue, in all its shades ranging from turquoise to cobalt blue and navy blue, is a favorite color among Nordic people. To add depth and warmth to this color, it’s a great idea to combine it with a shade of red. In our styling, we have chosen wine red, but you can also explore other options like shades of pink or orange.

This was a quick overview of how I usually work with complementary colors. Which combination did you like the most? I hope you learned something that you can use the next time you stand in front of the wardrobe and wonder what to wear :)

Hugs,
Marie
