I have previously written a blog post on how to style a large stomach how to style a large stomach. There was, and of course still is, a great need for that information, and the post was well-received. I often receive questions from larger women wondering how to style their large bust or round stomach, but there are also many women wondering how to style a small bust. So now I thought it’s time for a corresponding blog post with lots of useful information on how to style a small bust.
What kind of tops should you choose if you feel uncomfortable with a small bust? In order for a top to work in the desired way, there are certain requirements that the garment must meet. The top should not be too tight, but of course, it should not be too loose either. It should also not fit too loosely, as a shapeless garment can do more harm than good. A common issue for people with a small bust is that tops are not filled out and leave empty space around the bust. Here are my best tips on how you can balance out the proportions of your body.
My best tips
1. Start with a good bra
Make sure you have proper undergarments. Find a good, comfortable bra that provides gentle padding and looks natural. Some prefer push-up bras, while others like padded bras. Avoid underwire bras, as they are not designed for small busts.
2. Well-fitting clothes
Choose clothing that fits well, providing enough room without being overly baggy. Opt for slightly fitted models that highlight the waist! When the waist is defined (for example, with a belt), it often creates the illusion of a larger bust. Layering is also a great option.
3. High neckline confuses the eye
Deep and large necklines can make your bust appear even smaller. Instead, try high collars and high necklines. High boat neckline, polo collar, and round neckline suit you best as they make the bust area slightly wider and larger. Halter necklines can also work well if you have broad shoulders. A small V-neck is okay as long as it’s not too deep. However, the most flattering option is a round, non-deep neckline. Large, voluminous collars that reach down to the bust are excellent for you – they have the same effect as a big scarf.
Good tip for special occasions! Feel free to try garments with deep back necklines. You can also experiment with a narrow but deep V-neckline or unbutton a shirt down to the bust for a stylish look.

4. Stylish details and flattering patterns
It’s great to have something exciting happening in the upper part of your outfit, around the bust area, or in the neckline. Ruffles, pleats, lace, bows, pockets, embellishments… These add more volume to your bust.
For larger busts, wearing solid colors can create shadows. However, for smaller busts, solid colors may not create noticeable shadows. Opt for patterns that play tricks on the eye to create the illusion of more volume.
5. Use scarves
A scarf can add more volume to the upper body. Have fun experimenting with scarves of different thicknesses and materials. Try different tying techniques, such as loose draping, stylish knots, or elegant wraps.
6. Choose the right necklace
Opt for shorter necklaces when you have a smaller bust. Longer necklaces, forming a “V” shape, can sometimes make the bust appear smaller.
If you still like to wear longer necklaces, you can try to create some volume in an other way. For example, by combining the necklace with a scarf or by choosing a tunic with a high neckline or collar.
Below, you can see an example of when I have combined a long necklace with both a scarf and a tunic with a collar.

And my most important tip:
Many people are dissatisfied with their bodies, always finding something that’s too big or too small. Remember that there are many advantages of having a smaller bust. Those with larger breasts often complain of neck and shoulder pain, and they often experience poor posture. Some even opt for breast reduction surgeries for health reasons. It’s easier to carry a smaller bust, so be happy with who you are!
